PHP Engineering Support

Hire PHP Developers for Your Application

Running a PHP application that your business depends on? Peregrine maintains, stabilizes and modernizes custom and legacy PHP applications, moves them to supported PHP versions, and builds new features on them.

Work is arranged as fixed-scope projects, monthly retainers, or a combination agreed after the discovery call. We work with businesses and agencies, including teams in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, from our office in Noida, India.

Your first conversation is a 30-minute technical discovery call with an engineer. The button opens a short form; please do not send passwords, server credentials or code through it.

Fit

Is PHP Engineering Support the Right Fit?

A good fit when

  • A PHP application runs part of your business and nobody on your team knows the code well any more.
  • A system on PHP 5 or PHP 7 has to keep working while a move to a supported version is planned.
  • Your application was built by another vendor and you need a second team to review it and take it on.
  • You need fixes, updates and security patches applied regularly, not only when something breaks.
  • You need new features or an integration added to a custom PHP application without rewriting it.
  • WordPress needs custom functionality or an integration that plugins do not provide.

Probably not the right fit when

  • You want to hire an employee onto your own payroll. Peregrine is an engineering firm, not a recruitment agency.
  • The site is a brochure on a stock WordPress theme. A WordPress freelancer or a site builder will cost less.
  • The work is mainly new SaaS features or APIs on Laravel. See Hire Laravel developers.
What we build

What Does Peregrine's PHP Engineering Support Service Include?

Peregrine's PHP engineering support is mainly work on existing applications: legacy maintenance, stabilization, migrations to a supported PHP version, performance fixes, integrations and new features for business portals and custom PHP code. It also covers custom WordPress functionality and new PHP applications, as fixed-scope projects, monthly retainers or a combination.

Legacy maintenance

Fixes, security patches and dependency updates for applications whose original developers have moved on, released in small steps that can each be rolled back.

Runtime and framework migrations

Moving an application to a supported PHP version, and its framework or CMS with it, in tested steps while it stays in use.

Existing business portals

Customer portals, booking systems and back-office tools that staff and customers use every day, changed without long maintenance windows.

Custom PHP applications

Applications in plain PHP or a smaller framework, extended with new features within the structure the code already has.

Performance

Slow pages and reports traced to queries, missing indexes, caching or server configuration, measured before and after each change.

Integrations

Payment providers, CRMs, email services and vendor APIs connected to an existing PHP application, with retries and logging for the calls that fail.

PHP APIs

APIs that serve mobile apps, JavaScript frontends and partner systems, where the responses other systems depend on must not change by accident.

Custom WordPress functionality

Custom plugins, blocks and integrations where WordPress needs behavior that off-the-shelf plugins do not provide.

SaaS backends

Multi-tenant data, roles, billing and background jobs for subscription products on PHP. New SaaS work on Laravel is covered on our Laravel engineering support page.

Laravel applications

Maintenance and upgrades of Laravel applications. For new Laravel features, APIs and SaaS work, see Laravel engineering support.

Legacy PHP

Understanding Legacy PHP Code Before Changing It

Older PHP applications usually work, which is why they are still running. The risk is in changing them without knowing what they depend on. These are the areas we check before the first change.

Unsupported packages
Libraries with no release for current PHP, abandoned packages, and code copied into the project instead of installed through Composer.
Version compatibility
Functions and behavior that newer PHP versions have deprecated or removed, and stricter type handling that turns old warnings into errors.
Error handling
Suppressed errors, empty catch blocks and logs nobody reads, which hide problems until a user reports them.
Database drivers
Old database extensions and connection options that are missing or behave differently on a newer runtime.
Authentication
Hand-written login code, password hashing, sessions and cookies, where a regression locks users out first.
Deployment risk
Releases copied to the server by hand, no staging environment, or configuration that exists only on the production server.
Dependency upgrades
The order in which packages, extensions and the runtime can move, since each has its own supported range.
Regression testing
Tests around the paths that matter most to the business, written before the code or runtime changes.

The findings come back in writing before the main work is estimated. When the PHP version itself has to move, our PHP upgrade and migration service covers the staged upgrade.

Security and supported versions

PHP Security and Supported Versions

A PHP application should run on a branch the PHP project still supports and be updated when security releases come out. The PHP project publishes each branch's support dates on its supported versions page.

On October 21, 2026 the PHP project released PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 to fix two critical vulnerabilities. Our PHP2Shell guide explains which versions are patched and what to check first.

PHP 8.2 security support ends December 31, 2026. Our PHP 8.2 end-of-life upgrade guide compares the target versions.

Dates read from php.net on October 28, 2026. The pages change with each release, so check them again before planning.

PHP or Laravel

Do You Need a PHP Developer or a Laravel Developer?

Laravel is a framework written in PHP, so a Laravel developer is a PHP developer, but not every PHP application follows Laravel's conventions. Work on custom or legacy PHP means reading code with hand-written routing, direct database calls and older practices that a framework would have replaced. Laravel work happens inside the framework's conventions for routing, the database layer, queues, scheduling and testing.

If your application runs on Laravel, or you are planning a new SaaS product or API on it, see Hire Laravel developers. If it is custom PHP, WordPress or an older framework, this page applies. Many applications are a mix, and the codebase review shows which experience the work needs.

Timeline

How Long Does a PHP Engineering Support Project Take?

Peregrine sets the timeline after the discovery call and a review of the code, because two PHP applications of a similar size can need very different amounts of work. Changes to existing applications are split into small releases; new applications start with a discovery sprint, and larger work runs in two-week sprints with weekly demos.

Discovery call

A 30-minute technical call with an engineer about what the application does, what is going wrong or needs to change, and any deadline.

Review the code and hosting

PHP version, packages, error logs, tests and how releases reach production, using the legacy checklist on this page.

Agree scope and engagement

A written scope as a defined project, a monthly retainer or a combination, with access arranged once it is agreed.

Stabilize first

Tests around the critical paths, error logging that someone reads, and a staging environment before larger changes.

Change in small releases

Fixes, upgrades and features released one step at a time, each tested in staging and able to be rolled back.

Maintain or hand over

Continue with updates on a retainer, or hand over code, documentation and access as the scope lists.

New or existing

New Development or Work on an Existing Application?

Most PHP work starts from an application that already exists. This table shows how we would usually begin in each situation and what helps us start; the review of your code decides.

SituationTypical first stepWhat we need from you
Legacy stabilizationAn inventory of the PHP version, packages and errors, and tests around the critical paths before anything changesError reports or logs, the hosting setup and the parts of the application that matter most to the business
Ongoing maintenanceAgree an update and release routine, then work through fixes and updates on a monthly retainerKnown issues, who approves releases and how urgent problems reach us
ModernizationA compatibility review of the runtime, framework and dependencies that ends in a staged plan; see PHP upgrade & migrationThe PHP and framework versions, your host's options and any support end date you are working to
Enhancement of an existing applicationA review of the code around the feature, then one change built, tested and released through your processThe feature description and how releases work today; repository access once the scope is agreed
New custom applicationA discovery sprint that maps requirements and designs the data model, ending in a written technical planThe goal, the users and their workflows, and the systems it must connect to

Typical starting points only; what applies depends on what we find in the code.

Scope

What Determines the Scope of a PHP Engineering Support Project?

These are the inputs that change the effort. None needs a final answer before the first call, but each one you can answer makes the estimate tighter.

Codebase condition
Code with tests, current packages and documentation can be changed sooner than code without them.
Technical complexity
Custom frameworks, many extensions, large databases and unusual server setups each add review and testing work.
Experience the work needs
Routine fixes need different experience from security-sensitive changes, migrations or performance work.
Maintenance burden
How often things break today, how many updates are overdue and how much is changed by hand on the server.
Integrations
Each payment provider, CRM or vendor API has to keep working, and be retested, through every change.
Scope and length
A defined fix or migration ends at handover; ongoing maintenance continues as a monthly retainer.
Testing
Without tests, tests around the critical paths come before the code or runtime changes.
Deployment
Whether staging and a deployment pipeline exist, or releases are copied to the server by hand.

A sensible first phase

For an existing application, a sensible first phase is a codebase review covering the PHP version, packages, error logs, tests and deployment, ending in written findings and an order of work. For a new application it is a discovery sprint that ends in a written technical plan.

Getting started

How Does a PHP Engineering Support Project Start?

A Peregrine PHP Engineering Support project starts with a 30-minute technical discovery call with an engineer, not a salesperson. Larger builds then begin with a discovery sprint that maps requirements, designs the architecture and produces a written technical plan. Smaller, well-defined tasks can use the quick project form for a scoped estimate.

What to bring to the scoping call

  • The application URL and what it does for the business.
  • The PHP version and the framework or CMS, if you know them.
  • Where it is hosted and how changes reach production today.
  • Known errors, slow areas or updates that are blocked.
  • Who built and maintains it, and what documentation exists.
  • Whether you need a defined project, ongoing maintenance or a combination.

Partial answers are fine. Whatever is missing becomes the first item on the call.

Engagement options

Ways to Engage PHP Engineers

Defined project
A fixed scope agreed after the discovery call, such as a stabilization, a migration to a supported PHP version or a new feature, delivered in tested steps.
Ongoing maintenance retainer
A monthly retainer for fixes, dependency and runtime updates, security patch coordination and small features, with priorities reviewed at an agreed cadence.
Engineering capacity discussion
For teams exploring a more continuous allocation of PHP engineering time, subject to an agreed arrangement. It is discussed on the call and set out in writing if it suits both sides.
White-label development
For agencies delivering a PHP or WordPress project to their own client, under the agency's brand. See white-label development.

Engagements are fixed-scope projects, monthly retainers, or a combination, agreed after the discovery call.

Case studies

Which Case Studies Show Peregrine's PHP Engineering Support Work?

Peregrine has not published a PHP case study, so this page makes no project claims about PHP work. Every published case study lists Node.js in its stack. Ask about your PHP version, framework and hosting on the discovery call, and an engineer will tell you plainly whether we are the right team.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work on PHP 5 or PHP 7 systems?

Yes. We start by finding what the code depends on: functions that later PHP versions removed, packages with no current release, extensions and database drivers. Tests go around the critical paths first, then the system moves in stages to a version the PHP project still supports.

Can you take over code written by another vendor?

Yes. We review the code, dependencies, tests, hosting and documentation first and tell you in writing what we found before estimating the main work. A handover from the previous vendor helps, but we can start from repository and server access once the scope is agreed.

Do you work on custom PHP without Laravel?

Yes. Many business applications are plain PHP or use a smaller framework. We work within the structure the code already has, add tests around the parts we change, and introduce Composer or a framework only where it makes later work safer.

Will our WordPress plugins and custom code work on a newer PHP version?

Not necessarily. WordPress itself recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, according to its requirements page, but each plugin, theme and piece of custom code has its own compatibility. We list them with the PHP versions they are tested on, run the site on the target version in staging and fix or replace what breaks.

Do you offer ongoing PHP support?

Yes, as a monthly retainer: fixes, dependency and runtime updates, security patch coordination and small features, with priorities reviewed at an agreed cadence. It can follow a defined project or start after a review of the application.

How do we get an estimate?

Start with the 30-minute discovery call. For an existing application we usually review the code before estimating the main work, because its condition changes the effort more than its size. The scope is then agreed as a fixed-scope project, a monthly retainer or a combination. We do not publish rates.

Our PHP version needs a security update. Where should we start?

With an inventory of which PHP versions run where, and whether your host or Linux distribution has shipped a patched package. Security-driven patches and upgrades are covered by our PHP upgrade and migration service, which starts with that inventory.

Who owns the IP rights to what Peregrine builds?

IP ownership and assignment are governed by the executed client agreement.

Questions about the team, contract models and how progress is shown are answered on the services page.
